Breast Implant Massage
Massaging after breast augmentation provides many benefits including reducing your chances of capsular contracture and creating soft, natural looking breasts. It is typically advised that you begin breast implant massage one week after your breast augmentation procedure, but it is important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions closely as he may want you to begin before or after that time.
The Purpose of Massaging After Breast Augmentation
When breast implants are placed under the muscle of the chest wall, tissue forms around the implant to protect it from the rest of the body. This is a natural response and is seen whenever a foreign object is placed in the body. In some case,s the tissue can tightly form around the implant, causing a condition known as capsular contracture. This can be painful and can cause visible deformities. Often mistaken for hardening of the implants, this is infact the body's natural response to the implant. Several preventative measures are taken prior to and during your procedure to help reduce the risk of capsular contracture including creating a larger pocket for the implant. This also helps achieve more natural looking results.
Massage comes into play after breast augmentation to prevent overgrowth of the tissue and hardening of the breasts. Breast implant massage techniques move the implant around in the pocket created during surgery. This preventative measure also allows the breast to become softer and fall into place for a more natural look and feel.

A 35 year old is seen 3 months after release of bilateral implant capsule contractures along with size upgrade to achieve a full "D" cup at 5'4" and 120 lbs. Implants are placed in the sub-muscular position for a natural look, while avoiding wrinkling in a thin patient.
Mentor round smooth saline implants: 425cc filled to 425cc Left and 450cc Right due to asymmetry. Inframammary approach to allow internal breast lift to correct serious bottoming out of the original result.
This photo represents the technique of massage of the breast implant, displacing it out of its normal position, up into the excess pocket space above, allowing the pocket to stay widely open, and usually preventing any scar capsule contracture from forming.
The same photos showing the appearance of the breast as the implant is displaced. An animation of this process is displayed below. Our doctors see all patients a few days post-op to start the massage, and then every few days until mastery is demonstrated. Initially I like to move the implants every 2-3 hours, for a few days, then 2-3 times a day until about 3 weeks, and then once a day forever. The process takes a few minutes of well invested time.
